FOOD & RECIPE FAVORITES

Pancakes to Share!

One of my favorite Sunday morning treats are homemade pancakes!  I generally use bisquick and follow the package directions.  I substitute vanilla yogurt for the milk and add chopped apples, walnuts and a dash of cinnamon.  We serve the birds (of course!) without syrup or butter and they do not leave one scrap in their bowls! They are delicious to humans as well!

Birdie Chow

I make a mix each week and although the greens vary from week to week---it is a staple in our home.

  • Brown Rice and/or wild rice approx 1 1/2 cups
  • Beans (I use mung and lentils generally) approx 1 1/2 cups (soaked for a few hrs prior to cooking)
  • Frozen chopped brocolli (I use the equivalent of 6 boxes of frozen)
  • Fresh Kale, Collards & Dandellion (Chopped finely in food processor)
  • 2 lbs chopped carrots (chopped finely in food processor)
  • 1 or 2 chopped (seeded and cored) green pepper
  • 1 lb cranberries
  • 3 bags organic mixed veggies (no lima beans!) make sure that there is no salt in the frozen veggies.
  • 1 pkg rice pasta

1.  soak and cook the beans and rice.

2.  In a large container pour your frozen vegetables, cranberries, chopped carrots, green pepper, organic rice pasta. Add your chopped fresh greens to this mixture.

3.  When your beans & rice have been cooked, add the frozen brocolli to the mixture in order to thaw (should only take a few minutes).

4.  Once the brocolli is thawed, add the bean/rice/brocolli mixture to the large container of ingredients and mix thoroughly.

5.  Freeze in containers and serve daily.

When you are done, the colors should be bright and vibrant (green, orange and the red cranberries).  If it looks "greyish" (too many beans and too much rice)....add more greens the next time you make it.

I only make enough to last a week (this amt is for 7 birds).....

Easy Birdie Bread

1 Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix

2 jars organic baby food (one veggie and one fruit)

One egg

2 tablespoons flax seed oil

2 large carrots shredded in food processor

¼ cup chopped nuts (I used walnuts, almonds and pistachios)

1 cup of “beak appetite” in your favorite flavor

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and bake in a greased pie dish until toasty brown.  I always cook anything for the birds slightly more well done than I would for my own tastes.

If you choose, you can add a topping to your bread.  I've used shredded wheat cereal "crushed" and have also used some natural parakeet sized zupreem on top.

Bake at 325 degrees (approximately 20 minutes) or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.

  • The addition of baby food is a great way to get your bird to consume things that are good for them.  Today’s birdie bread had one-jar sweet potatoes and one jar of blueberries/apples.

Your own snack mix!

I've often made my own mix for the birds, start with some organic "puffed rice" cereal and add some dried fruits, nuts--maybe some rice pasta. This can be added into their pellet mix. A great source for the dried fruits and veggies is a product line called "Just Tomatoes" , you can find these often in health food stores or at the "Bird Safe Store."  Joe has a nice selection at a reasonable price.
