Holistic Care

Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar

This is the brand of apple cider vinegar I use for my birds.  I use 3 tsps per 1/2 gallon of water approximately once every 2 months as needed.

Grapefruit Seed Extract - GSE

I use grapefruit seed extract in a concentration of 50 drops to a large squirt bottle of water to clean cages with.  I squirt on, leave a minute or two and it disolves (in my opinion) better than those expensive "dropping removing" products.  Also makes a great all purpose cleaner that is "fume free."  I squirt it heavily on a dirty oven---leave for 30 minutes---and you'd be surprised what it does! (maybe not as good as easy-off but at least you still have lungs left when you are done!)

Although some people use this "internally" for their birds, I have never used it in this matter and therefore cannot recommend it.

George's Aloe Spray

This is distilled Aloe which has the consistency of water.  George's is fractionally distilled, meaning it is broken down into various parts, with the undesirable elements removed. It is then re-assembled. Some folks (including myself) have used this for dry skin or pluckers...Just spray "lightly" on affected areas.

Lily of the Desert or Naturade Aloe Detoxifying Formula

I will not be without either this product or the similar product by Lily of the Desert. It is very hard to find either.  It has aloe and cleansing agents that help with liver and kidney function.  I use 1 cap full for large macaws in drinking water for 1 week every 2 months.  For medium macaws, 1/2 cap and for cockatiels about 1/8 of a cap.

Either this or the Lily of the Desert product can be used.  I recommend calling around to different stores ---it will save a lot of frustration. I've even found that websites that offer it---you need to call to make sure they "really" have it in stock.

I was trying to find a picture of the Lily of the Desert bottle---it is even hard to find it online.

Cleaning

One of the best ways to keep you and your birds happy and healthy is to use good old fashioned soap and water!  Clean those bowls EVERY day w/hot soapy water---either by hand or in the dishwasher.  Best case would be to have a second set of bowls and have one in the dishwasher while the other is in use.  We give clean bowls (both water and food) twice daily every day!  You wouldn't eat off of the same dinner plate without washing in between meals---your birds deserve the same courtesy.

Cage papers should be changed every day.  We use plain old newspaper......we keep squirt bottles of cleaner handy to clean up messes on a daily basis. Once per week, the floor gets scrubbed and everything gets a thorough "soap & water" cleaning.  To be frank, I don't want to live in my bathroom and neither do they.

A bird that is given clean bowls, wholesome food and a clean cage will be happier and healthier that one that is living in filth.

As my grandmother used to say "soap and water is dirt cheap!"
